FERNHILL TRIUMPH IN YOUTH CUP FINAL

Fernhill showed the Illawarra football community what the Red and White faithful have seen all season, with a terrific come from behind performance to take out the 2011 Youth Cup. The boys started the game well against a Dandaloo side that finished second on the League table.

Matt Kellett made the most of the space he made for himself but his well timed shot in the 10th minute hit the cross bar with the Dandy keeper well beaten. Fernhill continued their domination of the early stages of the game with wingers Joe Moerman and Lachlan Blayney finding plenty of space and turning their opposite numbers inside out as they made the most of the passes from midfielders Kevin McDonald, Simon Habak and Matt Kellett.

In the 21st minute Simon Habak showed his class when he latched onto a ball on the edge of the Dandaloo penalty box but the post came to Dandy’s rescue again to deny the Foxes the lead. Minutes later, the Fernhill defence did their best to beat keeper Josh Timpano with a deflection but Timpano’s reflexes saved any embarrassment and the half ended scoreless.

Fernhill 0 Vs Olympic 3

Fernhill travelled to Herb Clunas Oval to round off a disappointing season and hoping to regain some pride with a victory over fellow strugglers Wollongong Olympic. Midway through the first half this was going to be more difficult as midfielder Vince Milicevic was sent off for kicking and Olympic took full advantage of the one man extra and duly converted 3 unanswered goals in an uninspiring game.

Although there were some good moments for the Foxes they failed to take their opportunities and ultimately paid the price for the lack of finishing off some good plays down the flanks. However in the end, the Foxes will now wait the fait of the promotion and relegation protocol to take place and hopefully have a chance to regain some dented pride in the Premier League next season.

OLYMPIC RUN RINGS AROUND FOXES

Fernhill 2 vs Wollongong Olympic 3

Both teams went into the final round of the League looking for a win to make the final five playoffs. Olympic showed their intentions early with superior intensity and were rewarded with a shot on goal in the first few minutes. Fernhill struggled to get into the game and were out-enthused by Wollongong whose ball movement and possession had the Foxes scrambling.

To their credit the boys hung on and tried to make the most of their opportunities but just couldn’t match Olympic’s intensity. With their glut of possession and field position it wasn’t long before Wollongong hit the lead with a well taken shot and went to the break up 1 - 0.

Foxes pay the price for lack luster performance

Fernhill 1 Vs Bulli 3

The Foxes had a lot to play for today at Slackey Flat to avoid relegation and hoping to upset Bulli’ssemi final aspirations, but it was the home side that wanted it more and Fernhill paid the price for a lack luster performance as the Bulli attack of Ricky Goodchild and Ben McDonald scored a goal each in the opening stanza and may have been more, except the linesman was in favour of the Foxes defence as two opportunities that rattled the net were given offside.

This was a going to be a tough day for the visitors if they kept up this attitude up as Bulli was in full control, and at 2-0 nil down going into the break Fernhill needed some inspiration in the second half if they had any hope of survival in the Premier League for 2012.

FERNHILL YOUTH OUTFOX BULLI

Fernhill 2 vs Bulli 1

The Round 21 clash was an important game for both teams as they started the day in equal 5th position on the League table. The Foxes got off to a bad start when they lost possession in the Bulli half and with a few quick passes, Bulli’s shot on goal wasn’t held by Josh Timpano and despite Adrion Djukic’s efforts to clear Bulli pounced on the rebound to put them ahead 1- 0 in the 5th minute.

The Foxes fortunately quickly settled down after the goal and got back into their rhythm with Christian Armour leading the frontline they started to make inroads past the Bulli defence. In the 8th minute a poor challenge by Bulli 45 metres from their goal gave Scott Simpson the opportunity to drive a ball into the Bulli penalty box. Christian Armour bravely attacked the high ball and was felled by the Bulli keeper but the rebound dropped to Lachlan Blayney who calmly placed the ball into the top right hand corner of the goal to even the scores.
